Eating at Applebee’s with celiac disease, IBS or food allergies

Applebee’s allergens, celiac and IBS: what its own interactive menu says as of October 2026 about gluten-sensitive items, shared fryer oil and what to ask.

8 min read · Updated October 12, 2026 · 4 sources

Key points

  • As of October 2026, Applebee’s says it offers "gluten sensitive" menu items but does not claim any are gluten-free, because it can’t confirm they meet the FDA’s definition.
  • Applebee’s says that because of shared cooking and prep areas, including common fryer oil, it is unable to guarantee any menu item is completely free of allergens.
  • Its interactive menu marks egg, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, wheat and gluten for each item, based on supplier information.
  • For IBS, several Applebee’s item names point to garlic, onion or honey, such as Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Garlicky Green Beans, French Onion Soup and the honey-based sauces.
  • Menus change. Check Applebee’s current interactive menu and tell your server about any allergy or celiac disease every time.

Can you eat at Applebee’s with celiac disease, IBS or a food allergy?

Applebee’s publishes allergen information for its regular menu in an Interactive Nutrition Menu with an "Allergen & Lifestyle" filter. As of October 2026, it says it is "proud to offer gluten sensitive menu items" but does not claim any menu items are "gluten free", because it cannot confirm they meet the FDA’s definition of gluten-free (under 20 parts per million of gluten).

Its full disclaimer is just as direct about allergies: "Because we have multiple sources of allergens in our shared cooking and prep areas, including common fryer oil, we are unable to guarantee that any menu item can be completely free of allergens." So this guide doesn’t point to "safe" choices. It summarizes what Applebee’s itself publishes, so you can see where gluten, milk, egg, soy, sesame and common FODMAP sources appear, and what to ask.

This guide covers Applebee’s US menu as shown in its interactive menu in October 2026. Applebee’s says its information comes from suppliers, that ingredient substitutions may not be reflected on its website, and that changes you request will affect the allergen information. Check the current menu and tell your server about your needs every time. If you have a food allergy, carry your prescribed medication, and call emergency services for a severe reaction.

What Applebee’s allergen disclaimer says

As of October 2026, the disclaimer on Applebee’s interactive menu makes these points:

  • Nine allergens plus gluten: Applebee’s provides allergen information from its food suppliers on egg, fish, milk, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts and wheat, and also identifies menu items with sulfites and gluten-containing ingredients.
  • Shared areas and fryer oil: because of multiple sources of allergens in shared cooking and prep areas, including common fryer oil, it can’t guarantee any item is completely free of allergens.
  • Soybean oil: it uses highly refined soybean oil in its fryers, which the FDA exempts from being labeled as an allergen.
  • Undeclared allergens: due to the complexity of its ingredients, other allergenic foods may be present in a menu item but not declared. For allergens not covered, Applebee’s asks you to call its Guest Relations team at 888-592-7753 for detailed ingredient information.
  • Variation: plates are hand-crafted, ingredients may be substituted, and modifications you request change the nutrition and allergen information.

The interactive menu shows allergens for a standard build of each item. Some closely related items carry different marks; for example, the Riblets Plate and Riblets Platter, and the full and half rack of Double-Glazed Baby Back Ribs, were marked differently when we checked, likely because of what comes with them. Look up the exact item and size you plan to order.

Celiac disease and gluten at Applebee’s

Applebee’s says its gluten sensitive items can be found with the "Avoid Gluten" filter. As of October 2026, its interactive menu did not mark gluten for items such as the 6 oz. and 8 oz. sirloin, 12 oz. Ribeye, Bourbon Street Steak, Grilled Chicken Breast, Blackened Cajun Salmon, Southwest Chicken Bowl, Tex-Mex Shrimp Bowl, Chicken Tortilla Soup, Baked Potato, Steamed Broccoli and Classic Fries, in their standard builds.

Those marks describe ingredients only. Applebee’s says it cannot confirm its items meet the FDA gluten-free standard, and it names common fryer oil as a source of cross-contact. That means fried sides such as fries may share oil with battered or breaded items like onion rings and chicken tenders, which the menu marks for gluten and wheat. The Celiac Disease Foundation lists fried foods cooked in oil shared with breaded products as a cross-contact risk.

Items marked for gluten include the burgers and sandwiches on their standard buns, pastas, breadsticks, the House and Caesar salads in their standard builds, French Onion Soup, Tomato Basil Soup, Mozzarella Sticks, Boneless Wings, Chicken Tenders, Double Crunch Shrimp and most desserts. Whether a shared kitchen is an acceptable risk is a decision to make with your gastroenterologist or dietitian. Our guide to gluten-free vs celiac-safe explains the difference.

Appetizers, mains and sauces: what the interactive menu marks

These examples come from Applebee’s US interactive menu as checked in October 2026, for each item’s standard build. They are not recommendations, and they can change.

Tree nuts appear in the Oriental Chicken Salad, Brownie Bite and Sizzlin’ Butter Pecan Blondie. Sesame appears in the Sweet Asian Chile sauce, Chicken Wonton Tacos, Double Crunch Shrimp and the Oriental dressing. Fish appears in the Caesar dressing. Many grilled proteins are marked for milk and soy even without a sauce, so check each one rather than assuming. For any allergy, FARE notes that shared grills and fryers are common sources of cross-contact, and our guide to major food allergens explains the US list.

IBS at Applebee’s: where FODMAPs tend to appear

Applebee’s interactive menu didn’t show full ingredient lists for items when we checked, so the clearest clues come from item names and descriptions, as of October 2026:

  • Garlic: Garlic Mashed Potatoes, Garlicky Green Beans, the Garlic Sirloin Steak Skillet, Garlic Parmesan wing sauce and Garlic Caesar dressing.
  • Onion: French Onion Soup and Crunchy Onion Rings.
  • Honey: Honey BBQ and Honey Pepper sauces, the Spicy Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich and Honey French dressing.
  • Wheat: breadsticks, pasta, buns, battered and breaded items.
  • Lactose: cheese sauces, Alfredo, queso, shakes and many sides marked for milk.

Monash lists garlic, onion, wheat-based breads, honey and cow’s milk among higher-FODMAP foods, and potato among lower-FODMAP ones. Seasonings, marinades and sauces can contain garlic or onion that isn’t in the item name, so ask your server what’s in a dish. A plainer protein with a baked potato or steamed broccoli is a common starting point, but it depends on your triggers and portion size. Our guides to eating out with IBS and hidden garlic and onion have more ideas.

How to order at Applebee’s with food restrictions

  1. Check the interactive menu for the exact item and size, and use the Allergen & Lifestyle filter (including "Avoid Gluten") as a starting point.
  2. Tell your server about an allergy or celiac disease when you sit down, and ask them to let the kitchen know.
  3. Ask about fryer oil and the grill if you’re avoiding gluten or an allergen, since Applebee’s names common fryer oil as a cross-contact source.
  4. Call Guest Relations (888-592-7753) if your allergen isn’t one Applebee’s lists, as it suggests.
  5. If you’re unsure, skip it. It’s fine to choose something simpler or eat elsewhere.
