Can you eat at Jimmy John’s with celiac disease, IBS or a food allergy?
Jimmy John’s is a sub shop, and as of October 2026 it doesn’t list a gluten-free bread. Its alternative is the Unwich, where the fillings are wrapped in lettuce. Its menu page offers sandwiches on French bread, sliced wheat or Unwich, and its ingredient search lists the Unwich simply as iceberg lettuce.
A lettuce wrap made in the same space as fresh bread is not the same as a gluten-free meal. Jimmy John’s doesn’t describe the Unwich as gluten-free or suitable for celiac disease, and this guide doesn’t either. It summarizes what Jimmy John’s own ingredient and nutrition information says about gluten, the major allergens and common FODMAP sources, and what to ask.
Jimmy John’s also publishes an allergen guide as a PDF. The version we read in October 2026 is marked effective July 1, 2026, and it says that "because individual foods may come into contact with each other during preparation of your sandwich, and because of shared utensils and equipment, we cannot guarantee that our food is free from any allergens." It asks you to tell your cashier about allergies or other dietary restrictions when you order. One limit to be upfront about: that guide’s allergen marks are symbols we couldn’t reliably read as text, so this guide doesn’t copy its chart. The item details here come from Jimmy John’s ingredient search and interactive nutrition menu, both linked from its own site and last updated October 9, 2026 when we checked.
Menus, recipes and suppliers change, and limited-time items come and go. Check Jimmy John’s current allergen guide and tell the team about any allergy or celiac disease when you order. If you have a food allergy, carry your prescribed medication, and call emergency services for a severe reaction.
Celiac disease and gluten at Jimmy John’s
From Jimmy John’s ingredient lists as of October 2026:
- French bread lists wheat flour, malted barley flour and wheat gluten.
- Sliced wheat lists wheat, rye, barley flakes, spelt and oats, among other grains.
- Flour wrap and garlic and herb wrap list wheat flour; the garlic and herb wrap also lists malted barley flour.
- Tuna salad lists Kikkoman soy sauce, made with wheat. Jimmy John’s nutrition menu marks the tuna sandwiches for gluten and wheat from the tuna salad itself, not only the bread.
- Meatballs list wheat breadcrumbs, and the chicken cutlet is predusted with wheat flour.
- Crispy fried onions and mini croutons list wheat; the croutons also list malted barley flour.
- BBQ Jimmy Chips list barley malt flour, and salt and vinegar chips list malt vinegar.
The Celiac Disease Foundation lists malt in its various forms and traditional soy sauce as sources of gluten. The tuna is the one that surprises people, because the bread isn’t the only issue: our guide to whether soy sauce is gluten-free explains why.
The Unwich itself is lettuce, but bread is handled in the same restaurant. The NIDDK notes that cross-contact can happen when food is prepared or served, and advises telling your server you have celiac disease and asking how food is made. Whether that’s an acceptable risk is a decision to make with your gastroenterologist or dietitian. Our guides to eating out with celiac disease and gluten-free vs celiac-safe go further.
Meats, sauces and sides: what Jimmy John’s lists
These examples come from Jimmy John’s ingredient search and nutrition menu as checked in October 2026. They describe what Jimmy John’s lists, not recommendations, and they can change.
| Item | Allergens or notes Jimmy John’s lists | Also in the ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey, smoked ham, roast beef | No major allergens listed | Turkey and ham list natural flavor or celery juice powder |
| Salami, capocollo | No major allergens listed | Salami lists granulated garlic and wine |
| Tuna salad | Fish, egg, soy, wheat (marked gluten) | Onion, celery, soy sauce |
| Hellmann’s mayo | Egg | |
| Kickin’ Ranch | Egg, milk (and marked gluten on the nutrition menu) | Garlic, onion |
| Ranch | Egg, milk | Garlic, onion |
| Creamy Caesar dressing | Milk, soy, egg, fish | Anchovies, garlic, onion |
| Horseradish sauce | Soy, egg | Mustard |
| Provolone, cheddar, Parmesan | Milk | |
| Avocado spread | No major allergens listed | Onion, garlic, cilantro |
| Oil and vinegar | No major allergens listed | Canola oil, red wine vinegar, olive oil |
One conflict in Jimmy John’s own information: the Kickin’ Ranch ingredient list doesn’t name a wheat or gluten ingredient, but the nutrition menu marks it for gluten. When the two disagree, it’s reasonable to follow the stricter one and ask in store.
Peanut oil chips and nut warnings
As of October 2026, every Jimmy Chips flavor on the ingredient list includes peanut oil, and so do the limited-time pickle chips. The nutrition menu doesn’t mark peanuts for the regular chips. The FDA excludes highly refined oils from its major allergen labeling rules, but Jimmy John’s lists don’t say whether its peanut oil is highly refined. If you have a peanut allergy, ask your allergist whether peanut oil is a concern for you, and ask staff how chips are stored and handled.
The oatmeal raisin and Trip Chip cookies and the fudge brownie are listed as processed in a facility that handles tree nuts and peanuts, and they contain milk, egg, soy and wheat. Jimmy John’s allergen guide also notes that its Alliance Kitchen #9600 in Atlanta "is a shared kitchen" where peanut, shellfish and tree nut allergens are present. Our guide to nuts, FODMAPs and allergies covers how peanuts and tree nuts differ.
IBS at Jimmy John’s: where FODMAPs tend to appear
Based on Jimmy John’s ingredient lists as of October 2026:
- Garlic and onion: in the avocado spread, ranch, Kickin’ Ranch, chipotle ranch, Caesar dressing, marinara, BBQ sauces, garlic and herb wrap, meatballs, chicken and brisket. The tuna salad lists onion, and the salami lists garlic.
- Wheat: in all the breads and wraps, the meatballs, the chicken cutlet and the tuna salad.
- Onion as a topping: yellow onion is listed as its own topping, so ask whether your sandwich includes it.
- Lactose: in cheese, ranch sauces and salt and vinegar chips, which list lactose.
- High fructose corn syrup: in the BBQ sauces.
Monash University lists garlic, onion, wheat-based breads and high fructose corn syrup among higher-FODMAP foods, and lettuce, cucumber and hard cheeses among lower-FODMAP ones. An Unwich keeps wheat off the plate for people who react to fructans in bread, but the fillings and sauces still matter. Avocado is portion-dependent; our guide on whether avocado is low FODMAP explains, and the spread here also contains onion and garlic. Our hidden garlic and onion guide has more on reading ingredient lists like these.
How to order at Jimmy John’s with food restrictions
- Check the current allergen guide and ingredient search for each part of the sandwich, including sauces and default toppings.
- Say it at the start, before the team begins building, and add it to the notes if you order online.
- Ask for a glove change and fresh lettuce, and ask whether the Unwich can be wrapped away from the bread area.
- Skip the default sauces or ask for them on the side, since many contain egg, milk, garlic or onion.
- Ask about chips and cookies if you have a peanut or tree nut allergy.
- If you’re unsure, skip it. It’s fine to choose something simpler or eat elsewhere.
Helpful phrases: "I have celiac disease. Could you change gloves and use fresh lettuce for my Unwich?" and "Does this sandwich come with mayo, onion or a sauce by default?"
